Abu Dhabi route boosts Ethiopian Airlines’ drive to link Africa with the world – CEO

Addis Ababa, July 16, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew said the launch of a new direct flight to Abu Dhabi marks a significant step forward in the airline’s mission to connect Africa more seamlessly with the rest of the world.

The new service to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, was officially inaugurated yesterday in Addis Ababa, and the inaugural flight touched down today at Zayed International Airport. Upon arrival, passengers were warmly received by senior officials from the airport and Etihad Airways.

Speaking at the arrival ceremony in Abu Dhabi, CEO Mesfin emphasized that Addis Ababa continues to serve as a strategic aviation hub, enabling the airline to link African cities with global destinations. He stated that the launch of the Abu Dhabi route further reinforces this objective by offering greater convenience for travelers and creating new avenues for trade and cultural exchange.

He further highlighted that the new service, established in partnership with Etihad Airways, enhances connectivity while fostering closer economic and people-to-people ties between Africa and the Gulf region.

The addition of this route brings the total number of Ethiopian Airlines’ destinations in the United Arab Emirates to four, underscoring its growing footprint in the Middle East.

The route’s launch was celebrated with an official ceremony held at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel in Addis Ababa prior to departure, attended by senior Ethiopian officials, UAE diplomats, and airline executives — reflecting the importance both countries attach to strengthening regional and global connectivity.

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest and most awarded carrier, currently serves over 130 international destinations and operates one of the youngest fleets on the continent. The airline continues to invest in expanding its network and enhancing its position as a leading gateway between Africa and the rest of the world.
