Addis Ababa expands public sanitation services with over 100 new facilities
Addis Ababa, June 27, 2025 (FMC) — The Addis Ababa City Administration has announced that 107 newly constructed public toilets have officially begun operating across the capital as part of the city’s ongoing corridor development initiative.
Tsedalu Mesele, Head of the Public Sanitation Facilities Team at the Urban Beautification and Green Development Bureau, said these new facilities significantly support the objectives of the Clean Ethiopia Movement. He added that many more toilets will be operational soon.
Beyond the corridor development areas, the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the World Bank, is also constructing public toilets in parts of the city not covered by the project.
Speaking to Fana Media Corporation, Mr. Tsedalu revealed plans to build an additional 100 public toilets next year. He further noted that public awareness campaigns encouraging proper use of these facilities have contributed to a decline in open defecation in the city.
To date, 250 public toilets have been constructed in Addis Ababa, with 57 local associations actively engaged in the corridor development efforts, he stated.
This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s national ‘Clean Streets – Healthy Lives’ campaign launched last year, aimed at promoting cleaner cities and dignified urban living across Ethiopia.
