Addis Ababa Police Announce Temporary Road Closures for Tomorrow’s “YeAelafat Zemare” Program at Meskel Square
Addis Ababa, January 5, 2025 (FMC) — The Addis Ababa Police Commission has announced temporary road closures in and around Meskel Square to prevent traffic congestion during the YeAelafat Zemare program scheduled to take place tomorrow afternoon, on the eve of Ethiopian Christmas.
The Police Commission said several tens of thousands of followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church are expected to gather at Meskel Square to observe and participate in the religious program.
To ensure public safety and facilitate smooth traffic flow throughout the event, the Commission stated that selected roads and highways will be closed to vehicular movement from the start of the program until its conclusion.
Accordingly, the following routes will remain temporarily closed:
The highway from Megenagna to Meskel Square, blocked at St. Urael Roundabout
The route from Bole Road via Getu Commercial Building to Meskel Square, closed at Olympia or the Dembel area
The road from Meskel Flower toward Dembel, blocked at Gazebo Roundabout
The route from Gotera to Meskel Square, closed at Agona Cinema Crossroad for heavy vehicles and at Tilahun Square for light vehicles
The route from the new Gofa road toward Legehar Traffic Light, closed at the intersection near St. Kirkos Church
The road from Mexico Square to Meskel Square, blocked at Legehar Traffic Light
The route from Ambassador Park Traffic Light to Meskel Square, closed at Harambe Hotel Traffic Light
Roads leading from Arat Kilo toward Meskel Square, closed on highways around the National Palace area
The Addis Ababa Police confirmed that all listed roads will be closed to vehicles starting at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, January 6, 2025, and will remain closed until the program concludes.
The Police Commission has called on residents of the capital and participants of the event to cooperate with traffic and security personnel to ensure the peaceful and orderly observance of the program.
