Afghanistan Earthquake Claims Over 2,200 Lives; Aid Efforts Intensify Amidst Challenges

Addis Ababa, September 4, 2025 (FMC) – A devastating 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on Sunday night, resulting in the loss of more than 2,200 lives, primarily in the mountainous Kunar province. The disaster has left numerous villages flattened, with residents trapped under rubble.

Rescue operations are underway, though hindered by challenging terrain and landslides. The Taliban government has deployed helicopters and army commandos to reach isolated areas, while tents and emergency supplies are being distributed to the affected populations.

Humanitarian organizations are facing significant challenges in their response efforts due to severe funding shortages. The Norwegian Refugee Council, for instance, has reported a funding gap of $1.9 million, with only $100,000 currently available. The organization has also noted a reduction in staff, now operating with less than half the personnel compared to previous emergencies.

The earthquake exacerbates an already dire humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, where ongoing crises such as drought, economic instability, and the return of millions of refugees from neighboring countries have strained resources. Aid agencies describe the current situation as a “crisis within a crisis,” underscoring the urgent need for international support and resources to address the immediate and long-term needs of the affected communities.
