African Union Mourns Passing of Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga

Addis Ababa, October 15, 2025 (FMC) – The African Union Commission (AUC) has expressed profound sadness over the passing of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a distinguished statesman and a towering figure in African politics.

In a statement, AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf extended his deepest condolences to Odinga’s family, the Government and people of Kenya, and the wider African community mourning the loss.

“H.E. Raila Odinga was a steadfast champion of democracy, good governance, and people-centered development,” the Chairperson said. “His decades-long commitment to justice, pluralism, and democratic reform left an indelible mark not only on Kenya but across the African continent. He inspired generations of leaders and citizens alike through his courage, resilience, and unwavering belief in dialogue and democratic institutions.”

The statement highlighted Odinga’s contributions beyond Kenya’s borders. As the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa, he worked tirelessly to advance continental integration and connectivity, helping to lay the foundations for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and broader socio-economic transformation.

Chairperson Youssouf noted that Africa has lost “one of its most visionary sons; a leader who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, democracy, and unity. His legacy will continue to inspire our collective efforts to build a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic Africa.”

The African Union joins the people of Kenya and the continent in celebrating the life, service, and enduring legacy of Raila Odinga, praying that his soul may rest in eternal peace.
