African Union Welcomes Libya’s Signing of Peace and Reconciliation Charter
Addis Ababa, January 14, 2026 (FMC) – The African Union has welcomed the signing of the Charter for Peace and National Reconciliation in Libya by the President of the Presidential Council, describing it as a significant step toward lasting peace in the country.
The African Union Commission expressed appreciation for the commitment demonstrated in the signing ceremony held in Tripoli on January 7, 2025, highlighting its importance for advancing Libya’s peace and national reconciliation process.
The AU called on all Libyan parties to fully commit to the process, engage constructively in dialogue, and prioritize the national interest over individual or factional considerations. The statement emphasized the need for responsibility, tolerance, and cooperation among all stakeholders to secure sustainable peace.
The African Union reaffirmed its solidarity with Libya and its people, reiterating its determination to support ongoing efforts for a peaceful resolution.
AU Commission also reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to implementing the Charter for Peace and National Reconciliation, signed in Addis Ababa in February 2025 under its auspices, while extending full support for the United Nations’ new roadmap in Libya.
