African Union welcomes U.S.-Iran ceasefire, calls for sustained dialogue
Addis Ababa, April 8, 2026 (FMC) — The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has welcomed the recently announced ceasefire between the United States and the Iran, describing it as an important step toward de-escalation and stability.
In a statement issued today, the African Union Commission Chairperson said the ceasefire, announced through mediation efforts led by Pakistan, reflects “commendable leadership and a shared commitment to de-escalation” among the parties involved.
He noted that the development is consistent with the African Union’s longstanding position advocating restraint and the peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue.
The Chairperson also commended the diplomatic efforts of key mediators, including the Oman, Türkiye, and Egypt, for their role in facilitating the agreement.
Highlighting the wider implications of the conflict, Youssouf said its impact has been felt globally, including across Africa, where disruptions to fuel supplies have contributed to rising inflation and increased costs of essential commodities.
He emphasized that the ceasefire offers an opportunity to alleviate the suffering of affected populations and stressed that sustained dialogue and inclusive diplomacy will be critical to achieving lasting peace.
The Chairperson further expressed full support for the ongoing Islamabad talks and urged all parties to maintain momentum toward a comprehensive and durable resolution, reaffirming that diplomacy and dialogue, in line with the United Nations Charter, remain the most viable path to resolving international crises.
