Ambassador Hirut: A Seasoned Woman in Diplomacy Reflects on Service, Strength, and Hope

Addis Ababa, June 27, 2025 (FMC) — In a candid and heartfelt conversation with Fana Podcast, Ambassador Hirut Zemene, Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), shared reflections on her 30-plus years in diplomacy, the values that shaped her, and her hopes for Ethiopia’s future.

Ambassador Hirut’s journey began humbly at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where she steadily rose through the ranks to hold prominent roles including Minister of State and ambassadorial assignments in multiple countries.

Known for her calm and composed demeanor, she attributes her resilience to the lessons of patriotism and self-confidence instilled by her parents. “They raised me to love my country deeply and to serve its people with dedication and integrity,” she said.

Beyond her diplomatic career, Ambassador Hirut is passionate about cultural expression. While serving as Ambassador to the Benelux countries and the European Union in Brussels, she proudly organized an art exhibition featuring 40 paintings from the Ale Felege Selam Art School — a celebration of Ethiopian creativity on an international platform.

Her humanitarian spirit shines through her admiration for Abebech Gobena, a revered Ethiopian humanitarian known as the “Mother of Many.” “Had I not chosen diplomacy, I believe I would have devoted myself to charity work,” she reflected.

The Ambassador spoke warmly of Ethiopia’s younger generation. “Our youth are the hope of the nation. Their hard work and ambition inspire me every day, and they now have more opportunities than ever before,” she noted with pride.

Acknowledging the challenges she faced, Ambassador Hirut recalled standing firm against diplomatic pressures and unfair media portrayals that threatened her country’s reputation. “I am proud of those moments when I stood up for Ethiopia and defended its image,” she said.

Ambassador Hirut’s story is one of quiet strength, resilience, and dedication—a testament to the vital role women play in shaping Ethiopia’s diplomatic landscape. Her journey offers inspiration to young women across the nation, encouraging them to pursue their ambitions with confidence and grace.
