Addis Ababa, July 2, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s ongoing nation-building journey is increasingly framed around the effort to strengthen a shared national narrative—one rooted in common history, collective identity, and the pursuit of unity amid diversity.

Across the African continent, colonial history is widely associated not only with military conquest but also with strategies designed to divide communities and weaken social cohesion. While similar attempts were made to fragment Ethiopia, the country’s long-standing state tradition and shared historical consciousness have been cited as key factors that helped preserve its unity and continuity as a sovereign nation.

Within this context, Ethiopia is described as having maintained a symbolic role as a beacon of African independence and unity, carrying forward a historical narrative that emphasizes resilience, shared struggle, and collective identity.
