Addis Ababa, July 12, 2026 (FMC) — The Chief Administrator of Ethiopia’s Amhara Region Mr. Arega Kebede said the newly inaugurated Debre Markos King Tekle Haymanot Airport will bridge infrastructure, opportunity, and growth for Gojjam by improving connectivity and unlocking the region’s agricultural, tourism, mineral, and investment potential.
He made the remarks during the inauguration ceremony of the modernized airport in Debre Markos city, East Gojjam Zone of Amhara Region, held in the presence of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and other senior officials.
Arega said the operationalization of the airport fulfills a long-standing aspiration of the people of Debre Markos and surrounding communities, who had waited for many years for the restoration of air transport services.
He recalled that the area had benefited from air services nearly three decades ago before operations were suspended, leaving the community without regular air connectivity. He said the restoration of the airport had remained a major public demand over the years.
The Chief Administrator noted that some had previously considered the revival of the airport difficult due to Debre Markos’ proximity to Addis Ababa and its challenging terrain. However, he said the project has now been completed with modern standards, providing the region with upgraded aviation infrastructure capable of supporting passenger and cargo services.
Arega expressed appreciation to the federal government for completing the project and commended Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for his continued support in bringing the long-awaited airport into operation.
He said the airport will help unlock Gojjam’s economic potential by improving access to its agricultural production, mineral resources, tourism destinations, and investment opportunities.
Together with expanded road and transport infrastructure, the airport will enhance regional connectivity, facilitate trade and investment, improve the movement of people and goods, and strengthen economic integration within the region and across Ethiopia, he added.
Arega stressed that the full benefits of the airport can only be realized through sustained peace, increased production and productivity, and responsible utilization of the region’s resources.
He called on government institutions, communities, investors, and other stakeholders to work together to safeguard peace, promote investment, and create a conducive environment for sustainable development.
The Chief Administrator also urged residents to reject violence and activities that undermine stability, emphasizing that maintaining peace, boosting agricultural productivity, and ensuring the free movement of people and goods are shared responsibilities essential for the region’s development.
