Addis Ababa, July 23, 2026 (FMC) — Ethio Telecom has registered a major financial and digital transformation milestone, generating 215.8 billion Birr in revenue during the concluded 2025/26 fiscal year while its digital payment platform, Telebirr, surpassed 9.13 trillion Birr in cumulative transactions, strengthening the company’s role as a key driver of Ethiopia’s digital economy.
Presenting the company’s annual performance report today, Ethio Telecom Chief Executive Officer Frehiwot Tamiru said the company achieved 99.7 percent of its annual revenue target, recording a 33.2 percent growth compared with the previous fiscal year.
She said Ethio Telecom continued expanding modern telecommunications services, strengthening digital infrastructure, and introducing technology-based solutions in line with the Digital Ethiopia strategy aimed at accelerating digital transformation and expanding inclusive digital services.
The CEO said the company’s performance demonstrates its growing transition from a conventional telecommunications operator into a comprehensive digital services provider supporting financial inclusion, digital commerce, enterprise solutions, and technology-driven economic activities.
A major milestone in this transformation has been the rapid expansion of Telebirr, Ethio Telecom’s digital financial platform, which has become a major pillar of Ethiopia’s digital payment ecosystem.
Frehiwot said Telebirr has processed more than 9.13 trillion Birr in cumulative transactions since its launch, including 4.19 trillion Birr transactions conducted during the concluded fiscal year alone.
She noted that the platform currently handles an average daily transaction value of 11 billion Birr, while its digital credit and microfinance services have expanded access to financial solutions for 21.64 million customers.
The company’s digital marketplace, Zemen Gebeya, also recorded transactions worth 340.3 million Birr during the fiscal year, reflecting the growing adoption of digital commerce services.
Alongside its digital finance expansion, Ethio Telecom continued investing in nationwide telecommunications infrastructure to meet rising demand for digital services.
During the fiscal year, the company constructed 603 new mobile base stations, bringing the total number of mobile sites across the country to 10,613. It also expanded 4G services to 246 additional towns, increasing the total number of towns benefiting from 4G connectivity to 1,200 and raising national 4G coverage to 82.2 percent.
The company further expanded 5G connectivity by adding seven more towns, bringing the total number of towns with access to 5G services to 33.
Frehiwot said Ethio Telecom increased network capacity by 10.2 million during the fiscal year, raising total capacity to 115 million. The company also extended network access to 117 rural districts, enabling around 1.5 million citizens to benefit from improved connectivity.
The company’s expanding digital ecosystem has also been accompanied by continued growth in its customer base. Frehiwot said Ethio Telecom’s total subscribers reached 90.1 million during the concluded fiscal year, exceeding its annual target by achieving 101.7 percent of the planned figure.
She said Ethio Telecom invested 76 billion Birr in infrastructure development during the fiscal year to improve service quality, expand connectivity, and strengthen Ethiopia’s digital foundation.
The company also continued advancing sustainable technology solutions by installing an additional 12.7 megawatts of green energy infrastructure, bringing its total renewable energy capacity to 39.7 megawatts.
Frehiwot said 44 percent of the company’s 10,613 mobile sites are now equipped with backup generators, while 23,422 kilometers of network infrastructure are powered through solar energy, enhancing service reliability and reducing environmental impact.
Ethio Telecom also strengthened enterprise digital infrastructure by serving 880 enterprise customers and increasing the capacity of its servers, cache systems, and international gateways to 4.3 terabits per second.
The company continued supporting Ethiopia’s national digital identity initiative by registering 32 million citizens for the Fayda digital ID program, with seven million ID cards already printed and made available for collection through 502 centers nationwide.
Frehiwot said Ethio Telecom remains committed to expanding digital access, strengthening innovation, and supporting Ethiopia’s ambition to build a digitally empowered economy through advanced technologies and inclusive digital services.
