Addis Ababa, February 14, 2026 (FMC) – The 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union officially opened today at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, bringing together leaders from across the continent to deliberate on key strategic priorities.
The summit is being held under the theme “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.” The theme places water security and safe sanitation at the center of Africa’s development agenda, highlighting their importance to economic growth, public health, food security, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
Across the continent, millions of people continue to face limited access to safe water and basic sanitation services, making the issue a critical development priority under Agenda 2063, the African Union’s long-term development framework.
Over the two-day meeting, heads of state and government are expected to deliberate on a range of institutional and strategic matters, including the report of the Peace and Security Council on the state of peace and security in Africa, African Union institutional reforms, and cooperation frameworks with Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms.
The Assembly will also consider reports from various AU organs and adopt decisions, declarations, and resolutions that will guide the Union’s policies and priorities for the coming year.
The summit will conclude on February 15 with a press briefing outlining the outcomes of the meeting.
