Addis Ababa, May 1, 2025 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) has announced that 7.3 billion tree seedlings have been prepared for this year’s Green Legacy planting campaign, as part of the government’s ongoing national reforestation, food security, and climate action initiative.
State Minister of Agriculture, Professor Eyasu Elias, told Fana Media Corporation that the country plans to plant 7.5 billion tree seedlings during this year’s campaign.
Of the seedlings prepared so far, 60 percent are fruit-bearing species, reflecting an increased focus on enhancing food security and environmental sustainability, he revealed.
Professor Eyasu noted that over the past six years, more than 40 billion seedlings have been planted under the Green Legacy initiative, with 60 percent comprising fruit and fodder varieties. He added that approximately 80 percent of the trees planted since the start of the campaign have successfully taken root.
The State Minister emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring the survival of this year’s plantings and will implement measures to support their long-term growth and impact.
