Addis Ababa Mayor Commissions 150 Education Projects Worth Over 5.2 Billion Birr

Addis Ababa, July 18, 2025 (FMC) – The Addis Ababa City Administration has inaugurated 150 education projects during the 2017 Ethiopian fiscal year (2024/25), a major investment aimed at improving access to quality education and learning environments in the capital.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mayor Adanech Abiebie stated that the projects—delivered at a cost exceeding 5.2 billion birr—are the result of faithful service and coordinated effort to build a generation through inclusive and sustainable education infrastructure.

The newly inaugurated projects include 14 newly built schools, 64 expansions of existing schools, and a total of 1,655 new classrooms.

Additional facilities such as ICT rooms, science laboratories, libraries, dining halls, and sports fields have also been established, with emphasis placed on accessibility for students and teachers with disabilities, it has been learned.

“These education projects address longstanding challenges related to overcrowding and poor infrastructure, which have negatively impacted students’ academic performance, particularly in national exams,” the Mayor noted.

She added that measurable improvements have already been observed, especially among students in Grades 2, 6, and 8.

Over the last five years, the city administration has constructed 110 new schools and expanded educational facilities across Addis Ababa as part of its broader strategy to ensure equitable access and enhance the quality of education.

According to the Addis Ababa City Communication Bureau, the projects were designed to meet both safety and aesthetic standards, creating inclusive, green, and student-friendly campuses.

“Building a generation is our top priority,” Mayor Adanech affirmed, extending her gratitude to all stakeholders, professionals, and community members who contributed to the successful execution of the projects.
