Addis Ababa, August 17, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopian star Gudaf Tsegay stormed to a commanding victory in the women’s 1500m at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Silesia, Poland, on Saturday, clocking a stunning 3:50.62.
The performance set a new meeting record and ranked as the fifth-fastest time in history, bringing her within a second of Faith Kipyegon’s world record.
The reigning world champion’s decisive run once again highlighted her dominance in middle-distance running. Already one of the most versatile athletes on the Diamond League circuit, with titles spanning from 1500m to 10,000m, Tsegay’s Katowice win confirmed her status as a leading contender heading into the World Championships.
Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet ran a personal best of 3:54.73 to finish second, moving her to second place on her country’s all-time list. Britain’s Georgia Hunter Bell completed the podium in 3:56.00, though both were well adrift of Tsegay’s blistering pace.
The Silesia Diamond League, staged in the Polish city of Katowice, is one of the premier stops on the global athletics calendar, drawing world-class fields in the final lead-up to the World Championships. This year’s meet produced standout performances across events, but Tsegay’s historic 1500m victory was widely regarded as the highlight of the night.
