Medemer State’ charts Ethiopia’s path forward, PM Adviser on East African Affairs says

Addis Ababa, September 17, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s latest book, The Medemer State, offers not only a comprehensive analysis of Ethiopia’s enduring challenges but also proposes practical, actionable solutions, according to Mr. Getachew Reda, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on East African Affairs.

The book, the fourth authored by Prime Minister Abiy, was officially unveiled yesterday in a landmark ceremony attended by President Taye Atsekeslassie, senior government officials, high-ranking military leaders, and representatives from diverse sectors of society. The launch featured in-depth discussions on the book’s themes and its significance for the nation’s future.

Speaking at the event, Getachew described *The Medemer State* as a profound reflection on Ethiopia’s past, present, and aspirational future. He emphasized that the work goes beyond diagnosing the country’s persistent problems by offering forward-looking, practical solutions designed to accelerate national development.

One of the book’s key insights, he noted, is its advocacy for the constructive harnessing of frustration. Rather than allowing discontent to manifest destructively, the book encourages both citizens and leaders to channel it into critical thinking and positive societal change.

Crucially, the book does not call for dismantling existing institutions. Instead, it highlights the importance of addressing structural weaknesses while preserving the elements that have proven valuable over time.

A recurring theme, Getachew noted, is the rejection of Ethiopia’s long-standing “winner-takes-all” political culture. The Medemer State proposes a modern, inclusive governance model in which all actors can contribute to, and benefit from, national progress—moving away from zero-sum politics.

He added that Ethiopia’s complex challenges can no longer be solved through outdated methods. The Medemer (Synergy) philosophy, with its innovative and integrative approach, provides a credible framework for meaningful change.

As an example, he pointed to the rapid transformation of Addis Ababa in recent years, where creative and forward-thinking solutions reshaped the capital’s urban landscape in a remarkably short time.

Getachew concluded that this spirit of renewal and resilience should not remain confined to the capital but must be extended across the entire nation to ensure Ethiopia’s sustainable growth and development.
