Addis Ababa, December 7, 2025 (FMC) — Renowned Pan-Africanist Professor Patrick Lumumba has called on African youth to embrace practical Pan-Africanism, emphasizing courage, integrity, and active engagement in the continent’s economic, cultural, and technological development.
Speaking to Fana Media Corporation during the African Media Awards in Addis Ababa, Lumumba highlighted the importance of turning the ideals of Pan-Africanism into actionable strategies that benefit ordinary Africans.
He noted that the event brought together representatives from over 40 African countries and stressed the need for full continental participation in future editions.
Lumumba urged media professionals to take a leading role in this effort by telling African stories from an African perspective.
He said journalists have a responsibility to cover issues ranging from economic development and innovation to environmental sustainability and governance, while also preserving the continent’s historical and cultural legacy.
He further explained that Pan-Africanism today should build on the legacy of leaders such as Marcus Garvey, Kwame Nkrumah, and Emperor Haile Selassie, with a focus on decolonization in economic, cultural, and spiritual terms.
PLO Lumumba stressed that practical Pan-Africanism must address the realities of African societies, inspiring youth to participate in nation-building and innovation.
The Pan-Africanist emphasized that courage and integrity are essential qualities for the current generation.
He said that self-belief, humility, and respect for history are critical for young Africans to drive positive change. According to Lumumba, cowardice and selfishness threaten progress, while informed and principled action can unite the continent.
Lumumba also highlighted the role of media in fostering unity, noting that journalists and media leaders have a duty to connect communities, share accurate information, and amplify Africa’s achievements globally.
He called on African media professionals to report responsibly, preserve historical narratives, and showcase the continent’s innovation, resilience, and cultural richness.
His remarks underscored the importance of turning Pan-African ideals into practical initiatives that empower citizens, strengthen continental cohesion, and create opportunities for future generations.
