AU Commission Chairperson Expresses Sorrow Over Death of Ethiopia’s Trailblazing Diplomat Konjit Sinegiorgis

Addis Ababa, April 7, 2026 (FMC) — Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of veteran Ethiopian diplomat Konjit Sinegiorgis.

In a statement, the Chairperson described Ambassador Konjit as a distinguished diplomat, a pioneering figure in Ethiopia’s foreign service, and a steadfast Pan-Africanist who dedicated her life to serving her country and the continent.

He noted that Ambassador Konjit built an exemplary career spanning several decades and played a significant role in advancing Africa’s interests and strengthening international cooperation. As one of Ethiopia’s earliest female ambassadors, she also helped pave the way for generations of African women in diplomacy.

“Ambassador Konjit Sinegiorgis embodied the highest ideals of African diplomacy, marked by integrity, excellence, and an unyielding commitment to our shared future,” the Chairperson said, adding that her legacy will continue to inspire future generations of African diplomats, particularly women.

On behalf of the Commission, the Chairperson extended his deepest condolences to the family of the late diplomat, as well as to the Government and people of Ethiopia and the wider African community mourning her passing.
