Addis Ababa, October 17, 2026 (FMC) — The sight of tens of thousands of residents filling streets across the Amhara Region in support of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) reflects a message extending beyond public demonstrations: the defense of Ethiopia is a national undertaking rooted in unity, shared responsibility and the determination to preserve the country’s future.
The rallies, held in Gondar, Woldia, Sekota, Debre Tabor, Lalibela, Genda Wuha and other towns, placed the ENDF at the center of a broader public expression of national commitment. Their significance lies not simply in the number of participants, but in the ideas conveyed through their slogans: respect for sacrifice, support for peace and an insistence that Ethiopia’s unity must not be undermined.
“We stand with the ENDF” was the clearest expression of that commitment. The slogan conveyed solidarity with the institution charged with national defense, while acknowledging the sacrifices made by its members and other federal and regional security personnel. It also underscored the importance of public confidence in institutions responsible for protecting the country.
Yet the deeper meaning of the pledge emerges from another declaration: “Our defense force is a symbol of our multinational identity.” This framing places national defense within the larger question of what binds Ethiopia together. The country’s diversity is a defining feature of its national life, and the idea of a shared defense institution speaks to a common stake in the security and future of the state.
Such solidarity acquires particular significance when peace remains a central public concern. Participants voiced support for government efforts to establish peace and rejected forces they said were seeking to destabilize the country. Their message was not limited to defending the nation against threats; it also emphasized the need to protect the conditions in which citizens can live together, pursue livelihoods and contribute to national development.
The connection between security and development was made explicit in the slogan, “We stand alongside the government to strengthen and develop the country.” The statement reflects a wider national reality: development cannot be separated from stability, and the gains a country seeks to secure depend on conditions that allow people and institutions to work toward lasting progress. National defense, in this context, is part of a larger effort to safeguard the space in which development can advance.
The rally messages also reached into Ethiopia’s strategic ambitions. “We will move from the dam to the port” connected the country’s development trajectory with its aspiration for sea access. It expressed the participants’ determination to see Ethiopia continue pursuing its national interests and expanding its opportunities. Such aspirations require sustained national effort and peaceful, lawful engagement with neighboring countries, alongside the protection of Ethiopia’s sovereignty.
The force of a public pledge, however, should be measured not only by the words spoken at a gathering, but by the responsibilities those words imply. Supporting the ENDF means recognizing the importance of its national mandate; supporting peace means rejecting destabilization and strengthening the conditions for coexistence; and affirming unity means treating the country’s future as a shared responsibility.
The demonstrations in Amhara have brought these themes together in a public declaration of solidarity. Their lasting significance will depend on how the commitment to national unity, peace and development is carried beyond the streets and translated into sustained action. A people’s pledge becomes a nation’s shield when solidarity is matched by responsibility and a common determination to protect the country’s future.
