PM Abiy says scaling nature-based solutions key to Africa’s climate future

Addis Ababa, June 16, 2025 (FMC) — African countries must invest in nature and scale proven environmental solutions to build climate-resilient economies, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed emphasized in a message issued Monday, ahead of the Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2) scheduled for September 2025.

Framing climate action as both an ecological and economic imperative, the Prime Minister underscored the need for a continent-wide shift toward Nature-Based Solutions and ecological models that prioritize re-greening and sustainability.

“This year’s summit, themed ‘Green Talks and Green Actions,’ is not just a forum for dialogue—it’s a call for practical solidarity and urgent implementation,” Abiy noted.

The Prime Minister’s message coincided with the launch of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy season, a flagship initiative that has mobilized massive tree-planting and environmental restoration efforts across the country since 2019. Ethiopia’s preparations for the summit, he said, reflect “a deep commitment to practical climate solutions.”

Set to take place in partnership with the African Union, ACS2 will serve as a platform for advancing Africa-led strategies to address climate change while reinforcing regional cooperation.

“The call is clear,” the Prime Minister underlined. “Invest in nature, scale proven solutions, and embrace a model where ecology drives the economy.”

He also underscored that his government is looking forward to welcoming participants of the event to the Ethiopian capital in September.
