Addis Ababa, July 11, 2025 (FMC) — Addis Ababa City Administration has made a historic leap in addressing the capital’s housing shortage by delivering 55,729 housing units in the 2017 Ethiopian fiscal year, Mayor Adanech Abiebie announced during a recent City Council session.
Speaking at the 4th regular meeting of the 4th year of the 3rd Addis Ababa City Council, Mayor Adanech highlighted the comprehensive nature of this achievement, which reflects the combined efforts of government bodies, private real estate developers, individual builders, and active community participation.
According to the mayor, 11,260 houses were constructed by individual developers, while private real estate companies completed 30,507 units. The city’s government development agencies also contributed by building 5,176 homes, alongside 8,786 houses that were renovated through community engagement initiatives.
Further complementing this housing drive, the city transferred 665 government-owned homes, consisting of 453 public housing units and 212 condominiums, to eligible residents, expanding affordable housing access to deserving members of the community.
Mayor Adanech emphasized that this multi-pronged housing strategy not only aims to meet the growing demand for shelter but also reflects a shared commitment to improving the quality of life across Addis Ababa. “This accomplishment is a testament to the power of collaboration among all stakeholders — the government, the private sector, and the community — working together to create a more livable and inclusive city,” she said.
She added that these housing developments are supported by ongoing investments in urban infrastructure and social services, ensuring that new neighborhoods are fully integrated and sustainable.
This milestone delivery of over 55,000 housing units represents a major step forward in fulfilling Addis Ababa’s pledge to inclusive urban development and provides a solid foundation to meet the needs of the city’s rapidly growing population.
