Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Says Major Progress Achieved in Women’s Empowerment Over Past Five Years

Addis Ababa, May 10, 2026 (FMC) — Addis Ababa City Administration Mayor Adanech Abiebie has highlighted what she described as major progress in women’s empowerment and political participation over the past five years, saying women have taken a stronger role in leadership, economic participation, and decision-making in the Ethiopian capital.

Her remarks followed a large rally in Addis Ababa where thousands of women expressed support for the ruling Prosperity Party ahead of Ethiopia’s 7th General Elections scheduled for next month. The gathering also coincided with Mother’s Day celebrations.

Speaking after the event, the mayor thanked women in the city for their participation, describing the rally as a strong demonstration of public engagement and support for the party’s agenda ahead of the polls.

She said the past five years had been marked by targeted efforts to strengthen women’s empowerment while also addressing the social and economic challenges faced by mothers.

According to her, the city administration has also worked to improve conditions that support children’s education and household wellbeing.

On economic participation, Mayor Adanech said women accounted for 51 percent of the two million jobs created in Addis Ababa during the period, reflecting what she described as a shift toward broader inclusion in employment opportunities.

She cited several city-level initiatives aimed at supporting women, including the construction of the Abebech Gobena Mother and Children Hospital, the establishment of women’s rehabilitation and excellence centers, and the expansion of women-focused enterprises such as bakery factories.

Turning to political representation, the mayor said women make up 54 percent of candidates presented in Addis Ababa for the upcoming general elections, while more than 40 percent of city council members are women. She said this increase reflects a growing institutional commitment to women’s participation in leadership roles.

Mayor Adanech also called for continued support for the Prosperity Party, saying it would help sustain peace and advance ongoing development efforts. Referring to the party’s wheat-sheaf symbol, she described it as representing inclusive growth that leaves no one behind.

She concluded by thanking residents of Addis Ababa for their contribution to maintaining stability and supporting development over the past five years.

Political parties across Ethiopia have intensified campaign activities ahead of the upcoming general elections, with efforts to mobilize voter support continuing nationwide.
