Addis Ababa, August 31, 2026 (FMC) — #Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa is setting an ambitious course centered on quality public services, expanded economic opportunity and stronger social justice as the capital advances its development agenda, Mayor Adanech Abiebie said.
The mayor made the remarks following a two-day discussion on the Addis Ababa City Administration’s development priorities, emphasizing that the administration would work to honor the trust and responsibility entrusted to it by the city’s residents.
Mayor Adanech said the administration would translate its priorities into concrete action and deliver on its commitments without compromising the confidence placed in it by residents.
She said the city’s development vision is anchored in making Addis Ababa a symbol of prosperity, while building on the determination of residents and government to overcome poverty, a strong culture of work, commitment to public service, and the ability to deliver quickly and effectively even under challenging circumstances.
Strengthening institutional capacity will remain a central focus, with efforts directed toward improving systems and organizational structures, expanding technology-enabled services and accelerating the development of integrated, quality infrastructure, she said.
The mayor also outlined an ambition to ensure accessible, quality and equitable services, including internationally competitive healthcare, while positioning Addis Ababa as a destination for health tourism and strengthening its standing as a major tourism city.
She further said the administration would work to expand opportunities for young people, increase women’s political participation and economic and social inclusion, and strengthen social justice through a broader culture of volunteerism.
Economic empowerment will also feature prominently, with priorities including raising productivity, reducing dependency, expanding employment opportunities and promoting urban agriculture, according to the mayor.
She said the administration would also pursue improved waste-management systems and broader urban development efforts aimed at making Addis Ababa cleaner, more attractive and more livable for all.
Mayor Adanech stressed that the city’s development cannot be achieved by government alone, underscoring the importance of engaging residents and other stakeholders while encouraging greater private-sector participation.
She said the administration would further strengthen a culture of rapid execution and sustained effort to translate Addis Ababa’s development vision into tangible results.
