Addis Ababa sets benchmark in inclusive urban housing – Mayor

Addis Ababa, March 11, 2026 (FMC) – Mayor Adanech Abiebie said that Addis Ababa’s housing initiatives reflect the city’s commitment to citizen welfare, providing dignified, modern homes for socially vulnerable groups, low-income residents, and people with disabilities.

The mayor noted that the newly inaugurated G+4 residential building in Lideta Sub-City was handed over to residents who contribute to the nation, as well as to those previously living in challenging conditions, including Kebele houses, makeshift shelters, and temporary plastic homes.

Highlighting the city’s broader achievements, Mayor Adanech indicated that over the past seven years, more than 45,000 homes have been built for underprivileged communities through people-oriented projects guided by community participation and charitable initiatives.

She added that the housing project inaugurated today was completed in just four months through coordinated volunteer efforts, replacing five older structures and providing homes for 70 households. The mayor said the project demonstrates that effective use of space combined with a shared commitment to overcoming poverty can produce high-quality results.

Mayor Adanech emphasized that the new building meets modern quality standards, is fully accessible to people with disabilities, and is equipped with essential household appliances, reflecting Addis Ababa’s focus on inclusivity, dignity, and citizen welfare.

She also expressed gratitude to all institutions, investors, and organizations that contributed to the project, particularly Tilahun Worku, Head of the Mayor’s Office, who coordinated investors and ensured the project’s successful completion.

The mayor reaffirmed that the city administration will continue to expand housing and services, stating that with care, collaboration, and people-centered planning, Addis Ababa can achieve even greater results for its citizens.

In addition, Mayor Adanech launched the construction of two new 9-story residential buildings in the city.

The Mayor also confirmed that she laid the foundation stones for the construction os the buildings in place of shanty houses in the area, noting that five existing houses were replaced with modern apartments.

Ms. Adanech explained that the project will benefit not only those already living in the neighborhood but also residents previously living in old and shanty Kebele houses under difficult conditions.

She indicated that the housing transfer system has been made transparent, with procedures clearly defined, lots publicly presented, and homes formally handed over to residents, ensuring fairness and accountability in the process.
