Addis Ababa, March 2, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopian National Defense Force Chief of Staff, Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, stated that the Battle of Adwa remains a timeless source of inspiration, reinforcing Ethiopia’s commitment to sovereignty, national unity and collective strength.
The 130th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa is being commemorated under the theme “Glorious Past, Radiant Horizon,” highlighting a defining milestone in Ethiopian and African history and its enduring relevance to contemporary national objectives.
The historic victory remains one of Ethiopia’s most significant achievements. On March 1, 1896, Ethiopian forces under Emperor Menelik II decisively defeated the Italian army at the Battle of Adwa, safeguarding national sovereignty and delivering a powerful message of resistance against colonial expansion. The triumph resonated across the African continent, affirming principles of self-determination and inspiring movements for independence.
Since that historic event, Adwa has symbolized national pride, courage and the enduring spirit of independence. It continues to shape Ethiopia’s collective identity and inspire unity among generations within the country and across the African diaspora.
Speaking at the Adwa Memorial Museum, Field Marshal Berhanu emphasized the historical significance of the battle and the central role of unity and bravery in overcoming challenges and defending sovereignty.
“The Victory of Adwa is a profound story of struggle, reflecting the broader quest for dignity and self-determination,” he stated. “This historic moment demonstrated that determination and collective purpose can shape history.”
He recalled the extraordinary conditions of the battlefield, where Ethiopian warriors, equipped largely with traditional weapons, confronted an adversary possessing advanced artillery. “The resilience and determination of Ethiopian fighters became their most formidable strength, illustrating the enduring value of courage in defending freedom,” he said.
Reflecting on the colonial response to the defeat, the Chief of Staff noted that Italian forces later returned with modern military capabilities, including aerial bombardment, approximately four decades after the initial conflict. Despite these challenges, Ethiopian veterans employed strategic and adaptive tactics that ultimately concluded the second campaign and reaffirmed Ethiopia’s independence.
Highlighting the contemporary relevance of Adwa’s legacy, Field Marshal Berhanu stated that the historic victory continues to guide the Ethiopian National Defense Force in its mission to safeguard national interests and heritage. He called for unity and solidarity as essential foundations for advancing Ethiopia’s development objectives and strategic aspirations.
He underscored the importance of protecting national interests and urged vigilance against actions that could undermine Ethiopia’s sovereignty or developmental goals. “The memory of Adwa remains a guiding light,” he concluded, “ensuring that the spirit of resilience and national pride continues to shape our collective future.”
