Adwa Victory Remains Eternal Inspiration for Defense Forces and African Unity, Says Defense Minister

Addis Ababa, March 2, 2026 (FMC) — The 130th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa was commemorated at the Adwa Victory Memorial with a vibrant ceremony in which Minister of Defense Aisha Mohammed described the historic triumph as an enduring source of inspiration for Ethiopia’s defense forces and a powerful symbol of African unity.

Speaking under the theme “Glorious Past, Radiant Horizon,” the Minister characterized the victory as a beacon of freedom for all African peoples and a lasting affirmation of human dignity. She emphasized that Adwa represents not only a milestone in Ethiopian history but also a global emblem of resistance and the sacrifices made in the pursuit of liberty and honor.

Minister Aisha stated that the victory demonstrated the moral strength of a united people and proved that even technologically advanced colonial forces could be overcome when confronted with collective determination. She noted that the sacrifices of the heroes of Adwa restored African dignity and laid the groundwork for the principles of continental unity and security cooperation that exist today.

The presence of defense ministers from across Africa at the anniversary events, she observed, underscored Adwa’s significance as a shared heritage of freedom and self-determination. It affirmed that the legacy of the battle extends beyond Ethiopia, resonating as a symbol of collective aspiration and historical pride for the entire continent.

The Minister further highlighted the role of the Ethiopian National Defense Force as the modern continuation of this heroic tradition. Beyond safeguarding national sovereignty, she stated, the defense forces contribute to regional peace and stability through cooperation and professional service, reflecting the values of discipline and responsibility inherited from the nation’s historical legacy.

“Adwa lives on within the spirit and dedication of our forces; it remains a source of strength and moral purpose,” Minister Aisha said.

Reflecting on the anniversary theme, she called on the current generation to transform the lessons of the past into tangible achievements for national development and prosperity. The psychological and moral strength drawn from the legacy of Adwa, she stated, must be directed toward efforts that advance Ethiopia’s economic and social objectives.

Minister Aisha concluded by affirming that the enduring covenant of Adwa is to preserve its historical significance while translating its lessons into meaningful progress. She emphasized that the responsibility of safeguarding this legacy belongs to the present generation, which must ensure that the values of unity, resilience and development continue to guide Ethiopia’s future.
