Addis Ababa, December 26, 2025 (FMC) — The African Union Commission has welcomed the conduct of municipal elections held in Mogadishu on December 25, describing the process as calm and orderly and congratulating the Somali people on the vote.
In a statement communicated on Friday, the Commission said the elections represent an important early step in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to advance democratic governance across the country. It noted that municipal-level elections play a key role in strengthening participatory governance and provide practical experience as Somalia continues along its nationally led political and electoral path.
The African Union also urged Somali political stakeholders to maintain constructive engagement through dialogue and inclusive consultations, emphasizing the importance of such efforts in promoting national unity and long-term stability.
The Commission reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to remain engaged with Somalia, supporting the Somali people in their efforts to strengthen inclusive governance and advance lasting peace and stability.
