Addis Ababa, May 31, 2026 (FMC) — Senior officials of the African Union have held discussions on Ethiopia’s preparedness for the upcoming 7th general election, scheduled for June 1, 2026, and the broader role of election observation missions in strengthening democratic processes across the continent.
The Head of the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) to Ethiopia’s general election, former President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta, received the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Ould Ghazouani Haddadi, who paid a courtesy visit.
The discussions focused on Ethiopia’s readiness for the national vote and related preparations ahead of the election.
The two sides also exchanged views on strengthening the effectiveness and long-term impact of African Union Election Observation Missions in supporting democratic governance, electoral integrity, and institutional learning across African countries.
The engagement underscores continued coordination within African institutions in advancing credible, transparent, and inclusive electoral processes across the continent.
The African Union Election Observation Mission remains deployed in Ethiopia as part of its mandate to observe and assess the conduct of the 7th general election.
