Addis Ababa, July 23, 2026 (FMC) — The African Union has underscored the strategic importance of maintaining safe and secure navigation in the Red Sea, warning that disruptions to maritime routes could threaten Africa’s trade, energy security and regional connectivity.
The statement was issued by African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, who strongly condemned attacks claimed by the Houthis against commercial oil tankers in the Red Sea following their announcement of a naval blockade targeting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The Chairperson said such actions represent a dangerous escalation with serious implications for regional peace and security.
The African Union expressed its full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and reaffirmed its support for the Kingdom’s security, sovereignty and stability.
Youssouf stressed that attacks against commercial vessels and any attempt to obstruct the free movement of maritime traffic constitute a grave threat to international maritime security and the stability of one of the world’s most strategic waterways.
He emphasized that freedom of navigation and the safety and security of commercial shipping must be fully respected in line with international law.
The AU Commission Chairperson further highlighted that secure Red Sea maritime routes are of vital strategic importance to Africa, noting that any disruption to commercial shipping risks undermining regional maritime connectivity, global supply chains, energy security and the economic interests of numerous African countries whose trade depends on safe and uninterrupted access to these sea lanes.
He called on the Houthis to immediately cease all attacks against commercial shipping, refrain from actions that could further escalate tensions, and fully respect international law governing maritime navigation.
Youssouf reiterated the African Union’s support for regional and international efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions, preserving maritime security and advancing a peaceful negotiated resolution in the interest of lasting peace, security and stability in the Red Sea region and the wider Middle East.
