Africa’s Future Must Be Shaped by Africans Through Collective Decisions

Addis Ababa, November 5, 2026 (FMC) – The African Political Parties Summit is more than a platform for dialogue, it represents a historic opportunity to translate political cooperation into action, turn a shared continental vision into tangible outcomes, and transform the aspirations of Africa’s people into reality.

Beyond political competition and the pursuit of power, African political parties have a responsibility to prioritize the interests of their people, the continent’s independence, and the future of generations to come.

The hosting of the African Political Parties Summit in Ethiopia provides a meaningful opportunity to address the political, economic, and governance challenges facing the continent.

From a political perspective, the summit offers an opportunity to bring diverse political perspectives together around shared continental interests, strengthen a culture of resolving political differences through dialogue, and identify common approaches to democratic governance, institutional accountability, and economic cooperation.

Strengthening Africa’s voice and negotiating power on the international stage requires political parties to look beyond domestic political competition and work collectively in pursuit of the continent’s broader interests.

Such cooperation is essential to ensuring that Africa’s future development is shaped not solely by external interests, but by the shared vision and decisions of Africans themselves.

Political parties play a crucial role in strengthening democracy, ensuring public representation, shaping governance, and influencing development policies across the continent.

By translating citizens’ aspirations and interests into policies, participating in electoral processes, and representing public voices on national issues, political parties lay the foundation for meaningful political participation.

Their responsibilities, however, extend beyond winning elections. They include resolving political differences through dialogue, respecting citizens’ rights, promoting the participation of women and youth in decision-making, strengthening accountability, and advancing sustainable development that benefits all citizens.

The Second African Political Parties Summit (APPS 2026), being held in Addis Ababa under Ethiopia’s hosting, provides a platform to examine the role of political leadership in driving Africa’s economic transformation and sustainable development.

One of the summit’s key contributions is the opportunity it creates for political parties to exchange experiences, share best practices, and explore common solutions in areas including development, democracy, inclusive governance, and continental cooperation.

Africa’s future prosperity will depend not only on its abundant natural resources but also on responsible leadership, strong institutions, active citizen participation, and effective cooperation.

Continental platforms such as this summit are therefore important in advancing an Africa that does not have its future shaped by others, but instead takes the lead in determining its own destiny.

The Second African Political Parties Summit kicked off today in Addis Ababa.
