Africa’s Security Future Depends on Collective Action, Defence Leaders Stress

Addis Ababa, March 4, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s Defence Minister Aisha Mohammed Mussa emphasised that Africa’s enduring security and stability depend on unity, coordinated action, and strengthened defence cooperation among nations.

She made the remarks during discussions with defence ministers and delegations from several African countries gathered in Addis Ababa for the Second African Defence Ministers’ Meeting and the commemoration of the 130th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa.

Minister Aisha described the Adwa Victory as a powerful historical lesson demonstrating that collective determination and solidarity can overcome formidable challenges. She noted that the commemoration serves as a reminder that peace and freedom require continuous commitment and cooperation to address contemporary security threats.

The minister stressed that Africa’s current security environment demands deeper collaboration among nations to safeguard stability and promote sustainable development.

During bilateral discussions with defence delegations from Kenya, South South Sudan, Zimbabwe, Zambia, the Republic of Congo, Botswana, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Mali, and Algeria, participants reviewed the implementation status of previously signed cooperation agreements.

The engagements focused on strengthening partnerships in defence and security through military technology transfer, joint training programmes, and experience-sharing initiatives.

Strategic cooperation frameworks were also identified to enhance collective efforts in combating terrorism, cross-border security threats, and emerging challenges. Ministers agreed that coordinated approaches and shared capabilities are essential for building resilient security systems and fostering regional stability.

African defence leaders commended Ethiopia’s significant contributions to continental peace and stability and expressed appreciation for participating in the Adwa Victory celebrations, which they described as a symbol of African pride and historical resilience. They reaffirmed their commitment to deepening defence cooperation and building common security capacities to address shared challenges.

The discussions underscored that while bilateral partnerships are increasingly shaping global strategic relations, Africa’s security future ultimately depends on collective action and unity. Participants agreed that enhanced collaboration will strengthen diplomatic engagement and contribute to the continent’s shared aspirations for peace, stability, and development.

The 130th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa was held under the theme “Glorious Past, Radiant Horizon”.
