Amb. Terekhin: Ethiopia must press ahead with unity as reform gains multiply

Addis Ababa, June 2025 (FMC) — Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Evgeny Terekhin, has encouraged Ethiopians to consolidate the gains made in recent years by fostering national unity and intensifying development efforts, in a recent exclusive interview with Fana Media Corporation.

Reflecting on the long-standing ties between Russia and Ethiopia, Ambassador Terekhin described the relationship as “very old and historically rooted,” noting that it dates back five or six centuries, initially built on people-to-people exchanges. Over the years, this foundation has evolved into a dynamic partnership spanning diplomatic, economic, educational, and technological domains.

“The current level of our bilateral relationship is highly promising,” Ambassador Terekhin said, emphasizing the growing collaboration in multiple sectors.

He cited education as one such area of active engagement, revealing that the Russian government has granted full scholarships to at least 100 Ethiopian students this year alone. “If we include those admitted through direct university-to-university agreements, the number could reach 300,” he added.

While acknowledging that trade and economic ties have not yet reached their full potential, the Ambassador affirmed they remain on a strong and positive trajectory.

He highlighted ongoing cooperation in nuclear science and technology, with both countries now preparing to design and implement joint projects across additional fields.

On the political front, Ambassador Terekhin underscored the frequent high-level engagements between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Russian President Vladimir Putin. “These consultations have helped build mutual trust and a solid foundation for stronger bilateral relations,” he noted.

Discussing Ethiopia’s domestic reform agenda, Ambassador Terekhin expressed admiration for the East African country’s progress over recent years. Comparing the situation today to that of seven years ago, he said, “We have witnessed commendable, visible changes.” Despite encountering serious challenges, he added, Ethiopia has pressed ahead with “perseverance and courage,” achieving what few countries could under similar conditions.

The Ambassador also stressed the importance of social cohesion in sustaining Ethiopia’s development. “When all nations, nationalities, and peoples of Ethiopia unite under the spirit of Ethiopianness, they can overcome any challenge,” he stated.

He praised the efforts of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government to reinforce national unity and called for these efforts to be further strengthened.

Addressing Ethiopia’s current economic trajectory and its push to secure access to the sea, Ambassador Terekhin said recent data clearly illustrates rapid economic growth. However, he cautioned that future development will require continued determination. “While the growth is encouraging, challenges remain. Sustained and intensified efforts will be vital,” he remarked.

He added that the government’s drive to expand the economy and achieve strategic goals, including maritime access, must continue without interruption. “These goals are ambitious, and they demand great effort and steadfast commitment,” he concluded.
