AU–CARICOM partnership marks a new era of collective opportunity, says PM Abiy

Addis Ababa, September 7, 2025 (FMC) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed emphasized the importance of regional unity and collaboration as he addressed the Africa-CARICOM Summit at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa today.

“The world is changing. Voices once ignored are now demanding to be heard,” PM Abiy said. “In this new era, we cannot speak in fragments. We must speak as one. That is why the AU–CARICOM partnership matters. It is rooted in opportunity and guided by frameworks that reflect today’s realities.”

PM Abiy highlighted that global challenges increasingly require coordinated regional responses, noting that regions like Africa and the Caribbean cannot act in isolation.

He underscored that partnerships such as AU–CARICOM are essential for tackling shared economic, social, and environmental challenges.

The Africa-CARICOM Summit brings together leaders from both continents to strengthen cooperation on trade, climate action, and sustainable development, reaffirming the strategic significance of interregional collaboration in an interconnected world.

Coinciding with the summit, Addis Ababa is hosting the second United Nations Climate Week (CW2) from September 1–6, 2025. This event serves as a platform for governments, businesses, and civil society to accelerate climate action and implement commitments under the Paris Agreement.

CW2 aims to provide technical insights and policy momentum to support the development of a unified voice on implementation, finance, and just transition ahead of COP30.

Following CW2, the Africa Climate Summit 2025 (ACS2) will take place from September 8–10, 2025, also in Addis Ababa. Convened by the African Union and the Ethiopian Government, ACS2 will focus on advancing Africa’s climate agenda and sustainable development priorities.

The summit will provide a platform for policymakers, practitioners, businesses, and civil society to collaborate on solutions for a resilient and green future.

These events underscore Ethiopia’s central role in Africa’s climate and diplomatic landscape, highlighting the continent’s commitment to addressing climate challenges and promoting sustainable development.
