Addis Ababa, February 14, 2026 (FMC) – African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has called on member states to prioritize sustainable water and sanitation systems, invest in high-performing infrastructure, and accelerate industrialization as key pillars for a resilient and prosperous Africa. His remarks were delivered during the opening of the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Youssouf emphasized that the summit takes place amid a complex geopolitical context, marked by ongoing conflicts, political fragility, and rising challenges to multilateralism. “Silencing the Guns on our Continent remains a challenge,” he said, noting the resurgence of unconstitutional changes of government and chronic instability in several countries.
He highlighted the need for Africa to strengthen political and economic integration and to mobilize domestic resources as external funding becomes increasingly limited. The AU’s 2024–2028 Five-Year Plan is underway, and the current decade of Agenda 2063 must demonstrate significantly higher levels of implementation and performance, he added.
Water and sanitation were singled out as vital resources for the continent. Youssouf described them as collective goods that should foster peace, reconciliation, and socio-economic development, aligning with the AU’s 2026 theme of the year.
The Commission Chair also stressed that transforming agriculture, harnessing Africa’s energy potential, and developing infrastructure are essential to achieving sustainable economic growth. He urged member states, civil society, and Pan-African institutions to work collaboratively to ensure actions are sustainable and inclusive.
In addition, Youssouf addressed ongoing humanitarian crises, citing Sudan, the Sahel, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and Somalia. He also expressed concern for the Palestinian people, emphasizing that international law and humanitarian principles remain the bedrock of global peace and security.
