Addis Ababa, October 16, 2025 (FMC) — African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf received members of the United Nations Security Council today at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa.
During the meeting, the Chairperson briefed the visiting delegation on the African Union’s key priorities, including peace and security, development, and governance.
He underlined the need to strengthen the partnership between the AU and the UN Security Council, particularly through Africa’s representation in the A3 framework.
Youssouf reiterated Africa’s long-standing call for permanent representation in the UN Security Council, emphasizing that the continent’s voice and leadership are essential in global decision-making.
He also urged for the full implementation of Resolution 2719, stressing that African-led peace support operations are crucial for ensuring lasting stability across the continent.
Members of the UN Security Council commended the AU’s leadership and reaffirmed their commitment to deepening AU–UN cooperation in advancing shared goals of peace, security, and sustainable development in Africa.
