Addis Ababa, August 30, 2025 (FMC) — Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, has congratulated Morocco following their victory in the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) final in Nairobi, describing the win as a proud moment for African football.
Youssouf highlighted the resilience and skill of all participating teams and praised Sudan for reaching the semi-finals despite domestic challenges. He also commended Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda for their joint hosting of the tournament, calling it a model of regional cooperation and partnership. The Chairperson emphasized that sports play a key role in promoting unity, diplomacy, and continental cooperation, underlining the African Union’s support for initiatives that bring African nations together through football.
Morocco’s victory in Nairobi came after a thrilling 3-2 final against Madagascar. Madagascar scored first in the ninth minute through Félicité Manouhantzua, but Morocco quickly equalized seven minutes later with a goal from Sabir Bougrine. In the second half, Oussama Lamlioui scored twice, including the decisive goal that secured Morocco’s third CHAN title, making them the most successful nation in the tournament’s history.
The tournament, jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, drew thousands of fans to the Moi International Sports Centre and was widely broadcast across Africa. The matches showcased the continent’s football talent and growing competitiveness, with Madagascar reaching the final for the first time and Sudan achieving a notable semi-final performance despite internal challenges.
