AU Commission Chairperson Pays Tribute to Qatar’s Late Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani

Addis Ababa, July 12, 2026 (FMC) — African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Emir of the State of Qatar, describing him as a visionary leader whose legacy will endure through his contributions to peace, diplomacy, and international cooperation.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who served as Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013 before handing over power to his son, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, passed away on July 12, 2026, at the age of 73. He was widely recognized for transforming Qatar into a prominent global actor and for advancing mediation and dialogue in regional and international affairs.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the AU Commission Chairperson extended his sincere condolences, on behalf of the Commission, to Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Government and people of Qatar, as well as the bereaved family.

Youssouf said the late Father Emir would be remembered as a visionary statesman whose wisdom and leadership elevated Qatar’s global standing and whose unwavering commitment to dialogue, mediation, and diplomacy demonstrated his belief in peaceful solutions to regional and global challenges.

The Chairperson further noted that the late Sheikh Hamad would be remembered across Africa as a valued partner who championed peace, development, and South-South cooperation while fostering strong and enduring relations between Qatar and the African continent.

He also praised Qatar’s contributions to global peace and stability, saying the country’s role in mediation and facilitating dialogue among parties in conflict reflects a deep commitment to multilateralism and the peaceful resolution of disputes.

The AU Commission Chairperson reaffirmed the African Union’s solidarity with the State of Qatar during its time of mourning and prayed for eternal peace for the late Father Emir, while extending condolences to his family and the people of Qatar.
