Addis Ababa, November 9, 2025 (FMC) — The African Union Commission said on Sunday that South Africa’s assumption of the G20 chair and its hosting of the summit in Africa for the first time breaks new ground for African diplomacy and marks a milestone for the continent’s role in global decision-making.
In a statement, the Commission said South Africa has prioritized issues affecting the Global South, including sustainable development and broader international participation in global governance.
The Commission noted that South Africa’s political system is based on equality, human rights, and the rule of law, principles aligned with the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
It also highlighted South Africa’s cultural and linguistic diversity, saying it has contributed to national cohesion and international recognition.
The Commission called on international partners to engage with South Africa and other African states with mutual respect and constructive cooperation, saying such engagement is critical for peace, development, and economic growth across the continent.
