Addis Ababa, November 6, 2026 (FMC) — Chairperson of the African Union Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has warned that unregulated political party financing risks exposing Africa’s political processes to corruption and external interference, calling for strict financial rules as part of efforts to strengthen democratic governance and political transparency.
Addressing the Second African Political Parties Summit in Addis Ababa, Youssouf identified money in politics as a key element of political transparency, stressing that political party finances must be governed by strict rules to prevent corruption and external influences.
He placed the issue within the broader responsibility of states to protect constitutional order, organize credible elections and ensure respect for fundamental freedoms, describing these as fundamental duties of the state.
The Chairperson stressed that dialogue must prevail whenever disagreements arise over these critical constitutional and governance matters.
He also recalled that the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance recognizes political pluralism and the rights and responsibilities of both governing and opposition parties, providing a framework for democratic political engagement.
Within this framework, he underscored the responsibility of opposition parties to exercise control and monitor public actions, making political accountability an important part of democratic governance.
Youssouf further emphasized that political parties must serve citizens by developing social and economic policies, building bridges between the public and institutions, and raising awareness of the broader interests of their countries.
He said these responsibilities help prevent sectarianism and tendencies that undermine national interests.
The Chairperson also highlighted the importance of open debate and citizen oversight in strengthening cooperation, stressing that African citizens must be involved in decisions affecting their communities.
He reaffirmed the African Union’s determination to advocate democratic governance, peace, development and greater inclusivity in the political space of its member states.
