AU Commission Chief Commends Ethiopia’s Electoral Process, Congratulates Prosperity Party on Election Win

Addis Ababa, June 23, 2026 (FMC) – Chairperson of the African Union Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has commended Ethiopia for the successful conduct of its 7th General Election and congratulated the Prosperity Party on its victory in the polls.

In a statement issued today, the AU Commission Chairperson praised the Government and people of Ethiopia for the successful conduct of the June 1 general election, describing the process as a demonstration of the commitment of Ethiopians to further consolidating democracy as a foundation for socio-economic development.

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf also acknowledged the professionalism and dedication of the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), noting its role in ensuring the smooth administration of the electoral process.

The AU Commission Chairperson further congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Prosperity Party for securing a majority in the election, following the announcement of the official results by NEBE on June 21.

He reiterated the African Union Commission’s commitment to strengthening democratic governance across AU member states through the promotion of credible, peaceful, and transparent electoral processes.

The statement adds to a series of assessments and reactions from continental institutions following Ethiopia’s 7th General Election, which observer missions from the African Union and IGAD described as largely peaceful and well-administered.
