Addis Ababa, December 24, 2025 (FMC) – The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has welcomed the United Nations Security Council’s decision to renew its mandate for another year.
The announcement came following the Council’s 10078th meeting, where Resolution 2809 (2025) extended AUSSOM’s mandate until 31 December 2026. Ambassador El Hadji Ibrahima Diene, Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for Somalia and Head of AUSSOM, described the renewal as a reaffirmation of the Council’s confidence in the African Union’s role in promoting peace, security, and stability in Somalia.
Ambassador Diene highlighted the mission’s continued support for Somali-led security priorities during the critical phase of the country’s security transition. “AUSSOM is fully committed to working with the Federal Government of Somalia, the Somali Security Forces, United Nations, and international and regional partners as we aim to consolidate the gains so far, and achieve lasting peace and stability in Somalia,” he said.
He added that the mission will adapt its support in line with evolving conditions on the ground while advocating for predictable and sustainable resources to deliver effectively on all responsibilities.
The Ambassador also acknowledged the contributions of Great Britain as the pen holder and the A3 Plus, including Somalia as the latest member of the Security Council, for articulating and defending Somalia’s national priorities and African positions during deliberations on the resolution.
AUSSOM expressed deep appreciation to the UN Security Council for its sustained engagement, as well as to Troop- and Police-Contributing Countries, Somali forces, and civilians for their continued dedication and sacrifices in pursuit of peace in Somalia.
