Aysha-II Wind Power Project a Cornerstone of Ethiopia’s Energy Security – PM Abiy

Addis Ababa, January 31, 2026 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said today that the Aysha-II Wind Power Project, officially inaugurated in the Somali Region, represents a landmark investment and a cornerstone of Ethiopia’s renewable energy and energy security strategy.

PM Abiy inaugurated today the project in the presence of President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of Djibouti Ismail Omar Guelleh, Ethiopian ministers, federal and regional officials, and local residents of the Somali Regional State.

Speaking at the inauguration, PM Abiy noted that the project, with an annual generation capacity of 467 GWh, delivers the reliable and scalable power infrastructure required for a technology-driven economy.

He highlighted the strategic significance of the Aysha plains, calling it one of East Africa’s premier wind corridors. The Prime Minister emphasized that the project’s proximity to neighbouring borders is a concrete step toward positioning Ethiopia as a central hub for regional energy trade.

Guided by the principle of Medemer, PM Abiy stated that Ethiopia is committed to converting its vast natural endowments into shared resources that physically and economically bind the Horn of Africa together.
