“Bounty of the Basket” Initiative Strengthens Sustainable Food Security Across Ethiopia – Deputy PM

Addis Ababa, February 5, 2026 (FMC) – Ethiopia’s “Bounty of the Basket” initiative is delivering tangible improvements in food security and household nutrition, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Truneh said in a statement shared on his social media pages today.

“The Bounty of the Basket initiative is more than a policy—it is a statement of values,” the Deputy Prime Minister said. “It reflects a government that respects its citizens, honors the nation, and acts with purpose to secure a better future.”

The initiative, launched under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, has transformed the lives of countless families by turning previously underutilized backyards into productive sources of food and nutrition. Through renewed and intensified implementation, the government has demonstrated a commitment to sustainable food security as a concrete reality, rather than an abstract goal.

“Through renewed and intensified implementation, the government has demonstrated its commitment to sustainable food security—not as an abstract goal, but as a lived reality for households across the country,” DPM Temesgen noted.

According to Mr. Temesgen, the initiative integrates innovative practices that bring animal-sourced nutrients directly into daily diets, improving health outcomes at the household level. It aligns with Ethiopia’s national health policy, which emphasizes nutrition and disease prevention as key priorities.

“Bounty of the Basket has reimagined what is possible—turning once-overlooked backyards into engines of productivity and dignity,” he said. “By integrating innovative practices, the initiative has brought animal-sourced nutrients directly into daily diets, improving health outcomes where they matter most: at the household level.”

“Bounty of the Basket is about life itself—health, national pride, safeguarding the dignity of our country, and realizing a shared vision of sustainable food security,” the Deputy PM said.

He added that the program is designed for long-term impact, with results that are meant to endure, scale, and continue benefiting generations. Deputy PM Temesgen also praised the tireless efforts of citizens and institutions whose dedication has made Ethiopian households’ baskets fuller today, and will ensure they are even fuller tomorrow.

“And because of the tireless efforts of dedicated citizens and institutions working hand in hand, our baskets are fuller today,” he said. “With the same resolve, they will be even fuller tomorrow.”
