Addis Ababa, July 22, 2026 (FMC) — Ethiopia’s foreign policy approach is rooted in a clear vision: that lasting peace, regional integration and shared prosperity are interconnected goals that can only be achieved through cooperation among East African nations.
The country’s engagement with neighboring states is guided by the principle that Ethiopia’s national interests are closely linked with the stability and economic progress of the wider region. Ethiopia believes that peace and prosperity in East Africa are mutually reinforcing, and that challenges facing one country can have wider regional consequences.
Anchored in the philosophy of collective growth and mutual benefit, Ethiopia has continued to advance initiatives aimed at strengthening economic ties, expanding connectivity and creating opportunities for shared development across the region.
Through its commitment to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Ethiopia is working to enhance regional trade and economic integration. The country has also prioritized infrastructure connectivity through major projects, including the Ethio-Djibouti railway, regional transport corridors and road networks linking Ethiopia with neighboring countries to facilitate the movement of people, goods and services.
Ethiopia is further expanding regional cooperation through telecommunications and energy connectivity, seeking to build a more integrated East African economic space supported by modern infrastructure.
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) stands as one of Ethiopia’s flagship development projects, designed not only to expand national electricity generation but also to contribute to the wider energy needs of East Africa. The project reflects Ethiopia’s broader vision of using renewable resources to support regional development while ensuring equitable and sustainable utilization of shared resources.
Ethiopia has already been supplying renewable energy to neighboring countries, including Sudan, Kenya and Djibouti, supporting industrial growth and strengthening regional energy cooperation.
The country’s expansion of clean energy generation also contributes to climate action efforts by helping reduce carbon emissions, supporting environmental protection and addressing climate-related challenges.
Ethiopia maintains that transboundary water resources should serve as instruments of cooperation and shared prosperity. The country has consistently emphasized that the utilization of its water resources should advance development without causing harm to downstream countries.
Beyond economic cooperation, Ethiopia continues to play an active role in promoting regional peace and security. As a key member of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African Union, Ethiopia has contributed significantly to efforts aimed at maintaining stability in East Africa.
Through peace support operations in Somalia, South Sudan and the Abyei area, Ethiopia has demonstrated its commitment to regional peace, recognizing that sustainable development cannot be achieved without a secure and stable environment.
At the same time, Ethiopia is investing in advanced security and cybersecurity capabilities to strengthen national resilience and protect strategic infrastructure. The country is also working toward developing technologies that could be shared with neighboring countries in the future, contributing to collective security and reducing external dependency.
Ethiopia’s vision for the region extends beyond national advancement. It seeks to create an East Africa where countries work together, connect their economies, share resources and build collective prosperity.
By combining peace efforts, infrastructure development, renewable energy expansion and regional cooperation, Ethiopia continues to pursue a future where the progress of one nation strengthens the advancement of the entire region.
