Addis Ababa, March 21, 2026 (FMC) — A total of 36 journalists from both public and private media institutions have completed a 21-day capacity-building training organized by the Ethiopian Media Center of Excellence.

The program aimed to enhance professional competence and promote ethical, responsible reporting, bringing together media practitioners seeking to upgrade their skills in line with the evolving demands of journalism.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Director General of the National Intelligence and Security Service and Board Chairperson of the Ethiopian Media Authority, Redwan Hussien, said the training strengthens journalists’ skills while upholding professional standards in the media sector.

He noted that building the capacity of journalists is critical for improving communication between the public and key institutions and for fostering accurate, responsible, and well-informed reporting. He added that the program provides participants with tools to deepen their knowledge, reinforce accountability in coverage, and maintain high journalistic standards.

Redwan further indicated that similar training programs will continue in subsequent rounds to benefit more journalists nationwide.

Director General of the Ethiopian Media Authority, Haymanot Zelke, described the first round of the training as a significant milestone for the media sector, highlighting its role in addressing capacity gaps and promoting professionalism.

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to build a capable and responsible media landscape that supports national development priorities.

The Ethiopian Media Authority established the Ethiopian Media Center of Excellence as a national hub for media development and professional capacity building. The center focuses on enhancing the skills of journalists and media leaders through practical, evidence-based programs aligned with the country’s needs.

With an emphasis on professionalism, freedom of expression, and media independence, the center provides specialized training in areas such as election, financial, and health journalism. It follows an inclusive, technology-driven approach that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application tailored to the Ethiopian context.

Through partnerships with media institutions, academic organizations, and industry experts, the center is bridging the gap between academic journalism education and real-world practice, contributing to the broader transformation of the media sector in Ethiopia and beyond.
