Addis Ababa, January 21, 2026 (FMC) – The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) today launched CBE Connect, a digital platform that integrates over seven financial services, enabling direct transfers from global banks to Ethiopian fintech wallets and breaking down barriers in cross-border transactions.
Developed in partnership with local fintech firm StarPay Financial Technologies (Eaglelion Technology Plc), the app combines seamless digital payments with traditional banking, providing secure and convenient tools for Ethiopians both at home and abroad.
At the launch event, CBE Acting President Ephrem Mekuria described CBE Connect as a “game-changer” amid Ethiopia’s modernization efforts under the Digital Ethiopia 2030 strategy. He emphasized that the platform is a central element of the bank’s global vision, connecting local and international users, simplifying remittances, and fostering worldwide financial inclusion.
Supporting multiple currencies, including the USD, CBE Connect allows effortless, fee-free transfers, significantly reducing reliance on informal remittance networks that dominate Ethiopia’s $5 billion annual remittance market. The platform also encourages the use of legal remittance channels, offering a safe alternative to unregulated systems.
StarPay CEO Besufekad Getachew noted that the platform “packs over seven financial services into one app, removing barriers with direct transfers from global banks to Ethiopian fintech wallets.” Beyond remittances, users can pay utility bills worldwide, manage investments such as purchasing cars or homes in Ethiopia, and handle daily finances with ease.
CBE Connect integrates with Commercial Bank accounts and other domestic banks, enabling smooth interbank transfers and streamlined cash flows. Its robust design supports both online and offline operations, ensuring access even in remote areas with limited internet connectivity.
