Addis Ababa, May 24, 2025 (FMC) – The 24th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for the Ethiopian University Students, which showcased not only linguistic prowess but also artistic expression with contestants demonstrating their deep appreciation for Chinese culture through various performances, was held at the Addis Ababa University on Friday (23 May).
In the 24th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Ethiopian University Students 14 talented students contested, showcasing their mastery of Chinese language and culture.
Speaking on the occasion, Tourism State Minister Sileshi Girma underscored the broader implications of this cultural exchange, noting the exponential growth in Chinese investment and tourism in Ethiopia.
He praised the rising enthusiasm among Ethiopian students for Chinese language and cultural studies, viewing it as a catalyst for enhanced trade relations and cultural diplomacy.
China’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Chen Hai, said the competition has been a platform for China and rest of the world to conduct various exchanges in Chinese.
”The contestants have showcased their Chinese language proficiency and artistic talents, expressing their deep love for Chinese Culture and strong appeal for China.”
The event showcased not only linguistic prowess but also artistic expression, with contestants demonstrating their deep appreciation for Chinese culture through various performances.
From among the contestants, Mandefro Simegnew and Kaleab Sime secured impressive victory.
Speaking after his win, Mandefro eloquently emphasized the growing significance of Chinese language proficiency in today’s interconnected world, particularly in the realm of international investment and commerce.
“Chinese has evolved beyond mere linguistics into a crucial bridge for economic opportunities,” he said.
“We’re witnessing a surge of interest among Ethiopian youth in mastering this language, recognizing its potential to forge stronger cultural bonds between our nations.”
Echoing these sentiments, Kaleab noted that proficiency in Mandarin opens doors to both economic advancement and deeper cultural understanding as Chinese investments flourish in Ethiopia and tourism flows increase.
