Addis Ababa, November 22, 2025 (FMC) — The Ethiopian Railways Corporation (ERC) today ceremonially laid the cornerstone for the Bishoftu Railway Academy, a landmark initiative set to strengthen Ethiopia’s transportation infrastructure and railway expertise.
The groundbreaking ceremony was presided over by Transport and Logistics Minister Alemu Sime, who officially inaugurated the construction of the academy.
ERC CEO Helina Belachew, Bishoftu City Mayor Alemayehu Assefa, and other senior federal and regional government officials attended the event.
Spanning 62 hectares in Bishoftu, the Railway Academy is envisioned to become East Africa’s premier institution for comprehensive railway education and training.
Once completed, it will serve as a center of excellence, equipping a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting the evolving demands of Ethiopia’s and the region’s modern railway sector.
The academy’s programs will offer rigorous technical, managerial, and operational training aligned with international standards, fostering professional capacity in all aspects of railway operations.
The initiative is designed to support Ethiopia’s broader vision of developing a modern, safe, and efficient railway network that fuels economic growth and strengthens regional integration across East Africa.
In line with Bishoftu City’s Smart City initiative, the academy will integrate advanced technologies, including smart classrooms and digital infrastructure, providing students and the local community access to cutting-edge educational resources.
The project represents a strategic synergy between advancing Ethiopia’s railway capabilities and promoting sustainable urban development in Bishoftu.
