Addis Ababa, March 24, 2025 (FMC) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has emphasized that Ethiopia’s ongoing corridor development initiatives are generating extensive economic and social benefits that extend far beyond urban beautification.
According to the Prime Minister, the corridor projects underway in cities are significantly reshaping the country’s overall development trajectory.
In a comprehensive interview with local media Kana TV, he elaborated that corridor development efforts in Addis Ababa and other major urban centers are transforming urban landscapes while creating expanded opportunities in infrastructure, trade, and nationwide economic growth.
He explained that these developments reflect a broader shift in Ethiopia’s urban development approach under the Medemer (Synergy) philosophy, which recognizes cities as the central pillars of the country’s social and economic foundation.
The Prime Minister noted that previous administrations often viewed urban centers with suspicion, considering them as political threats—a perspective he described as a major miscalculation that impeded national progress.
In contrast, he stressed that urban populations should be embraced as a crucial political and economic base.
Underscoring the strategic importance of cities, he pointed out that Addis Ababa alone accounts for nearly half of Ethiopia’s annual GDP.
He further described the capital as a “laboratory of togetherness,” where diverse cultures, languages, and religions coexist and collectively contribute to a shared national identity.
The Prime Minister stated that cities serve as key indicators of a nation’s level of civilization and development, reflecting efficiency, progress, and modernity.
He emphasized that urban centers must be regarded as engines of prosperity, with their residents forming the backbone of national transformation.
Describing cities as centers of innovation, production, and creativity, he characterized them as the “hands and minds of the nation,” adding that rapidly expanding urban areas such as Addis Ababa possess vast human potential capable of accelerating economic growth if effectively harnessed.
Addressing corridor development specifically, the Prime Minister noted that these initiatives are designed to serve multiple objectives, including bridging infrastructure gaps, reducing unemployment, and supporting long-term economic expansion.
He stated that the projects have generated significant employment opportunities both during and after construction, while also equipping young people with practical skills that, in many cases, exceed formal academic training. He added that many of these skilled individuals are now actively contributing to major projects in regional cities.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the contribution of corridor development to accelerating housing construction, noting that thousands of residential units have been delivered within a short period, thereby stimulating the real estate sector.
He added that improved road infrastructure has substantially reduced travel times, enhancing mobility and overall productivity across the capital.
Furthermore, he identified the riverbank development project in Addis Ababa as a landmark initiative with international significance.
Despite its complexity, he described the project as transformative and one that will serve as a lasting legacy for future generations. He added that it has created inclusive public spaces that strengthen social cohesion while promoting healthier lifestyles through parks and recreational facilities.
He noted that similar development initiatives are being replicated in cities including Bishoftu, Jimma, Arba Minch, and Bahir Dar, with additional projects currently underway in Hawassa.
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister identified digital technology as a central pillar of Ethiopia’s national development agenda, describing it as a critical enabler across all sectors.
He stressed that without strong digital infrastructure, progress in key sectors such as education, healthcare, and industry cannot be sustained, underscoring the importance of building a competitive and skilled workforce.
Referring to ongoing efforts, he highlighted the establishment of Africa’s leading artificial intelligence institute, along with the implementation of the “5 Million Coders” initiative, through which more than 3.5 million citizens have already been trained.
While acknowledging these achievements, the Prime Minister emphasized that sustained commitment and continued investment in digital transformation will be essential to ensuring Ethiopia’s long-term growth and global competitiveness.
