Council for Public Participation to GERD Launches Nationwide Support Hotline

Addis Ababa, September 3, 2025 (FMC) — The Office of National Coordination for Public Participation to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has announced the launch of a nationwide support hotline, giving Ethiopians the opportunity to show solidarity with the completion of the dam.

In partnership with Ethio Telecom, the initiative enables citizens to send a text message to the dedicated number 8120, contributing from as little as 5 Birr.

The campaign, which runs for 33 days from September 2 to October 10, 2025, invites every Ethiopian to express their support and share ideas for the final phase of the project.

Speaking at the launch on Monday, Aregawi Berhe, Director General of the Office for the Coordination of GERD, paid tribute to the sacrifices Ethiopians at home and abroad have made to bring the project to fruition. He stressed that the dam has been constructed without foreign assistance, describing it as a model of self-reliance and a benchmark for future national undertakings.

Aregawi likened the GERD’s achievement to the Victory of Adwa, which defied colonial impositions, saying the project reflects Ethiopia’s capacity to chart its own course in development.

Ethio Telecom’s Chief Communication Officer, Mesay Woubshet, affirmed the company’s pride in supporting the national cause, highlighting that the SMS campaign serves as a unifying platform for Ethiopians to celebrate the GERD.
